The Ministry of Public Health on Thursday closed the country’s best field hospital previously set up in Nonthaburi to treat Covid-19 patients in Greater Bangkok due to a drop in the number of new daily cases.

Health ministry officials have closed the Busarakham field hospital at the Impact exhibition and convention complex after the facility treated 20,436 Covid-19 patients in Greater Bangkok since it opened on May 14.

During the ceremony, Dr Kiatiphum Wongrajit, Permanent Secretary for Health, said it only took seven days to set up “the biggest and best field hospital in the country.”

It opened with 1,000 beds and contributions from the government, as well as the private and civil sectors, then expanded it to 3,700 beds. With intensive care and semi-intensive care units, the facility has freed up beds for critically ill patients in conventional hospitals.

“In July, up to 200 patients per day were admitted due to outbreaks of the Delta variant of Covid-19,” said Dr Kiatiphum.

“Admissions gradually declined in September when there were 5-6 new cases per day. The last patient was released on September 20,” he said.

Dr Kiatiphum congratulated all the staff who dedicated themselves to helping the patients. They have returned to their places of work and the resources from the field hospital will be distributed to hospitals in need across the country, he said.
